What Is Anxiety?

In general, these conditions encompass what is usually a normal state of emotion that everyone at some point in their lives should experience, perhaps even on a regular basis whenever facing stressful circumstances. Examples of common situations of stress are mid-terms and final exams for students, or moving from one city to another, getting married or divorced, etc. However, when someone has an anxiety disorder, these states of emotion become deranged and intense to a degree that it begins to interfere with activities of every day regular life. Classifications of Anxiety

An innumerable number of anxiety disorders are listed officially in the physician's reference manual, and only a few of those are given here to illustrate the complexity and diversity of the disorders. The extent to which each subtype can be cured with anxiety relief is unclear. Those with panic disorder are characterized by sudden feelings of terror which come and go with little foreshadowing. Finally, those with SAD are afflicted by fear and embarassment when amongst people in typical social settings. The fears center upon being ridiculed by those around, or perhaps upon the possibility of acting in such a way that it brings embarassment.

Diagnostic Methods

The diagnosis of anxiety disorder prior to treatment with anxiety relief methods is not easy, but involves examination, interview and listing of common behaviors and symptoms which are associated with the disorder. Such symptoms include common phenomena, such as nightmares, problems with sleep, or feelings of fear. But the symptoms also include more severe behaviors, such as uncontrolled, persistent thoughts, repeated actions, unsteady heart beat known as palpitations, and dizziness. Each symptom by itself is not indicative of an anxiety disorder, but a few together provides compelling evidence that one is a sufferer.

The Disease Etiology

One major, perhaps unanswered question, is the source of anxieties in the mind, external stressors aside. The answer is not known, as is the case in many psychiatric disorders. Some claim that it is due entirely to external stressors, others believe the origin to be biological and perhaps genetic so that it can be passed down from parents to children. In a similar way how high blood sugar and obesity arises in those whose lifestyle habits make them prone, anxiety disorders may also be a manifestation of long term stressors that come to elicit a permanent stress response in people.

From Stress To Anxiety

These permanent stress responses then become anxiety disorders. When stressed, people often releash chemicals into their own body that primes it for fight or flight responses. Long term stressors may cause these chemicals to be permanently unleashed, leading to anxiety. Evidence for this comes from MRI scans of those who are afflicted by disorder. In these, morphological features of the brain undergo a chance in areas which control mood. Additionally, it has been shown that these disorders run in the family implying an inheritable condition. Whichever condition one suffers, it is worth a try with some of the available anxiety relief methods.
